Seasonal Styling Tips: Transitioning from Summer into Autumn

Updated: Sep 2

Navigating the shift from summer’s long, sunny days to autumn’s crisp mornings and unpredictable showers doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Think of this as your invitation to embrace change, refresh your wardrobe, rediscover your personal style and step confidently into a new season with outfits that feel both effortless and empowering.

The essentials of dressing for a change in season

The shift in seasons rarely happen overnight. One moment, you’re basking in late summer sunshine and the next, you’re reaching for an umbrella against a sudden downpour. Mornings may feel brisk enough for a coat, while by afternoon you’re peeling back the layers. No wonder it can feel confusing knowing what to wear.

You might be longing for the comfort of autumn dressing (think cosy knits, tailored coats and deeper colours) yet hesitant about how to blend these with your lighter summer pieces. You might want to look polished and put-together but feel unsure about how to dress for such unpredictable days.

Rest assured, this season is not about discarding your summer wardrobe just yet or rushing headlong into chunky knits. It’s about creating balance, layering cleverly, embracing versatile pieces, playing with colour and texture to carry you smoothly from one season to the next.

Imagine slipping on your favourite summer dress but adding a blazer, jean jacket or ankle boots to ground it for autumn. Picture a lightweight knit worn under a blazer, paired with wide-leg trousers, or a pleated skirt teamed with both trainers on a warmer day and knee-high boots when the temperature drops. These simple yet thoughtful shifts not only prepare you for whatever the weather brings but also transform how confident and put-together you feel.

It is not just what you wear that has to take into consideration of the change in season, but we also start to see a shift in the colours. Switch neutrals from light and bright to deeper tones, we are seeing navy, burgundy and forest greens starting to make an appearance this month. Plus, if you have been carrying a summer bag, it is time to switch it to something a little more substantial.

Don’t forget that jewellery can helps us to lift any outfit, add that extra sparkle and help us to repurpose our outfits.

How can I help?

As a stylist, I can help make this transition between seasons seamless, inspiring and uniquely tailored to you. Together, we’ll explore:

Layering with intention: combining light summer staples with autumn’s warmer textures.

Colour transitions: easing from breezy whites and pastels into richer, earthy hues.

Versatility: identifying key pieces that adapt to sunshine, drizzle and everything in between.

Personalised styling: curating your look that suit the season and reflects your identity.
