Dressing for an Occasion: Occasionwear That Isn’t Just a Dress

Updated: 3 days ago

What do you do if you just aren't a "dress" person, and have to attend an occasion where you are unsure on what to wear?

Occasionwear shouldn’t feel like a chore, it should feel like a celebration of you. At many of these special events, we want to feel confident, comfortable and safe in the outfits we choose, particularly if there could be a professional photographer about!

For many, the dress feels like it is the only solution for Black Tie, weddings, and formal events, but what if I told you there were other options that could fit more suitably with your personal style if dresses are not quite you?

Here are some of my favourite alternatives for occasionwear that aren't a dress.

Tailored Jumpsuits - How to Style Them for an Event

A jumpsuit is one of the easiest replacements for the go-to dress as it is an outfit all on its own, just like a dress, but with trousers! It is a great option for many body types, and with the patterns and colours available, can work for a huge number of events.

The most important part when dressing for a more formal occasion is to consider the fabric of the jumpsuit itself. While a more relaxed, jersey jumpsuit may not feel correct for a formal event, one in silk, linen, or velvet are more suitable!

Next, the draping and shape of the jumpsuit can make a difference in how formal it feels. One that has draping, an eccentric cape, or a more tailored fit will enable you to feel much more formal.

As with any outfit, the accessories can totally transform how the piece feels - adding a small clutch, metallic heeled sandals, and statement jewellery really can take a more casual jumpsuit you'd wear for brunch with your friends, to a formal look for your best friend's wedding!

For some inspiration on jumpsuits I have found that work for the more formal occasions and events, visit my inspiration board, here.

Elegant Separates: The Art of Mixing and Matching

You may be hiding an elegant, event-ready look in your wardrobe already! Matching some of your more unexpected pieces together can create a more formal look, when you dig a little deeper.

There are a few steps to take to make sure your more traditional go-to looks feel more event-ready:

  1. Find one statement piece from your wardrobe. Whether it's those bright red heeled pumps, your favourite wide leg trousers, that special pair of earrings, or a floor-length maxi skirt in your favourite colour.

  2. Look for rich, heavy fabrics that are a higher quality. Steer clear of jersey, while fabrics such as silk, velvet, crepe or satin are more formal fabrics to look for.

  3. Layering can make the outfit feel more aligned - it ties the two separates you choose together. Whether it's a blazer, wrap, or overcoat.

  4. Consider the colour palette or patterns. Monochromatic looks are the easiest and simplest way to do this - picking one colour and staying within it (picking different shades to add depth). If you love pattern, pick one piece with a pattern, while matching it with the other pieces in a complementary shade to the base colour.

Those work trousers that fit you flawlessley, could work beautifully with a silk blouse, wedge heels and a pair of pearl earrings, while a structured blouse in a strong accent colour can be paired with a more sleek pair of trousers or midi skirt.

Co-Ord Sets: The Matching Magic

There’s something deeply satisfying about a matching set. A co-ord top and skirt or trouser combo instantly pulls an outfit together, making you look put-together in seconds. Choose a set in a bold colour or a subtle print, and you’ll turn heads without even trying. The best part? It’s reusable across multiple occasions, because why reinvent the wheel when you’ve already found your perfect look?

Statement Suiting: Confidence in Every Stitch

Suiting isn’t just for the office. A beautifully tailored blazer and trousers in linen, wool, or even a soft stretch fabric can make you feel powerful and polished. Whether you opt for a classic black or a texture like tweed or herringbone, suiting is the ultimate wardrobe staple - one that works for weddings, dinners, or even a night out with friends. The key is to choose pieces that fit you perfectly, so you feel as good as you look.

Midi Skirts: The Versatile Essential

A midi skirt is a wardrobe hero. It’s flattering, adaptable, and can be dressed up or down with ease. Pair it with a fitted top and ballet flats for a daytime event, or swap the shoes for heels and add a silk cami for an evening affair. The trick? Choose a silhouette that suits your shape - whether it’s pleated, pencil, or A-line - and let it be the foundation of your occasionwear.
