A Milestone Birthday and How our Wardrobe Changes

Updated: Sep 30

Turning 60: Evolving Style for a New Season of Life

On 1st October I celebrate my 60th birthday. I always think that going into a new decade gives us some uncertainty, but also excitement. How will I feel in this new season of my life? Who will I want to be? What will I want to do or achieve? For me I also think about how I want to present myself in the world.  Life is quieter for me these days. I moved to the Cotswolds last year which has a slower pace of life and I am very content in immersing myself in creativity and learning, enjoying exploring who I am.

Many of my clients come to me when they hit a ‘big’ birthday or a new milestone in life and they realise their old wardrobe isn’t working for them anymore. You might see this show up in a few different ways. You may notice that when you open your wardrobe, nothing feels quite right anymore. Outfits that once felt fresh and fabulous now feel tired or simply don’t reflect who you are today. You may find yourself reaching for the same safe pieces on repeat or avoiding certain events because you don’t feel confident in what you’re wearing. Sometimes it’s just a sense that your clothes belong to a different version of you rather than the woman you’ve now become or want to become.

Milestone moments such as birthdays, retirement, career changes, becoming a grandmother or even moving house often bring a shift in how we want to be seen. They’re a reminder that life is moving forward and it’s natural to want your style to move with it. Our clothes are not just fabric, they are part of our identity and when we evolve, our wardrobe deserves to evolve too.

What I love about working with clients in these milestone seasons is helping them uncover how they want to show up now. It’s not about dismissing the past or throwing away everything you own but instead curating a wardrobe that feels like the best version of you today. That might mean introducing new colours that lift your complexion and your spirits, or shapes and fabrics that feel more aligned with your lifestyle. It’s about balance, comfort without compromise and elegance without effort.

The joy of reaching a new chapter is the chance to reinvent. At sixty (like me), forty, fifty, seventy or beyond, you get to define who you want to be and how you want to be seen. Clothing can become an empowering way to step into that version of yourself with confidence and pride.  So, if you’re standing at your wardrobe and wondering why nothing feels right anymore, perhaps it’s not you, it’s just that your wardrobe is waiting for you to catch up with who you’ve become. I think there’s something rather exciting about that.

If you feel that life is changing but your wardrobe hasn’t quite caught up, I’d love to talk to you about how the two can align. Whether you're stepping into a new decade, embracing a different lifestyle, or simply sensing that your clothes no longer reflect who you are, this could be the perfect moment to explore a new chapter in your personal style. Let’s make sure your wardrobe supports not just the life you have, but the life you’re stepping into. Please get in touch to find out more.
